Pilot mountain State Park is home to a mile long, south facing, quartzite cliff band. Due to the fact that it is south facing, winter climbing is very good especially if the sun is shining. The park has over 80 routes and is the easiest access of any cliff in the state, and is located next to the most recognizable pinnacle in NC.
This is an intermediate/advanced climbing event and prior rock climbing experience, along with proper gear will be required.
We will primarily try to concentrate on the Little Ampitheater area, moving later on to the Parking Lot section of the mountain. These areas contain routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.10 and are mostly top rope climbs. Sport routes and lead climbing routes are abundant at Pilot Mountain but CHOA will not be able to supply gear for such climbs if desired.
CHOA will provide ropes and anchoring gear for the routes. You will need to supply your own harness, atc belay device, helmet and climbing shoes.
Weather could be a concern so I will update you as we draw closer to the event date. Please dress accordingly as temperatures could change throughout the day. Make sure you bring plenty of water and food for a great day at the crag!!!
